Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Yurts
Have you ever stayed in a yurt before? The circular shapes of yurts are to help keep the wind pressure to a minimum! The yurts in the Porcupine Mountains come with beds, stoves, but they don’t have water or electricity, so you still have that camping feel - but a bed to sleep in!
Did you know that Porcupine Mountain State Park is Michigan’s largest state park, boasting over 90 miles of trails and about 60,000 acres! The trails are beautiful for a weekend hike through the changing fall colors!

Headlands International Dark Sky Park

The Headlands International Dark Sky Park was one of the first International Dark Sky Parks’ in the world and it’s right here in Michigan, on the Straits of Mackinac!
This is the perfect place to see the Northern Lights in Michigan, right on the shore of the Great Lakes. While it can be difficult to predict when the Northern Lights will happen, there are many resources here on the MI Dark Sky Park website that will help you plan your trip around when the Northern Lights are predicted.
The Guest House on the park’s property is the perfect spot to stay with up to 20 friends and family. Stay at the house for a few nights for a chance to see the Northern Lights. Even if you don’t see the Northern Lights, you will have an amazing time seeing all the stars in the dark sky!
Cheboygan State Park
Stay in a Tepee at Cheboygan State Park! The two tepee’s at Cheboygan State Park have a wooden floor, bunk beds and service outlets.
The big attraction of the Cheboygan Sate Park is the Cheboygan Point Light! According to the DNR website: “Visitors will find the foundation remains of this once-operating lighthouse. In 1851, the Cheboygan Point Light was originally built on a pier in Lake Huron, but due to rough water and winter ice, it only lasted a few years. In 1859, it was rebuilt on the shore and was in operation until 1930 by the United States Lighthouse Service. It was at this time that the lighthouse and surrounding properties were transfered to the State of Michigan for public park use.”
Many people haven’t considered staying at the Cheboygan Sate Park, but you should add this one to the top of your list. Especially since there is 200 miles of scenic views along Lake Huron for you to relax and enjoy!
