Did you know that sometimes you can see the Northern Lights on Mackinac Island? 

There are a total of 10 Dark Sky Parks in the United States and less than 200 in the entire world - and one of the Dark Sky Parks is across from Mackinac Island, outside of Mackinaw City named Headlands International Dark Sky Park. 

Key months to see the the Northern Lights in Michigan are August - April, with peak months being April, October and November. You will need a clear night, with limited light pollution. That’s why Mackinaw City / Mackinac Island are such great places to see the Northern Lights. The further north that you go, the chances are better for seeing the Northern Lights. 

Many people drive to the Headlands Bark Sky Park just to see the Northern Lights, but it’s exciting to know that you might be able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights simply while staying on Mackinac Island! 

Next time you are in Northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula or on Mackinac Island, be sure to do some research regarding the weather during your stay! Find out if there is a chance to see the Northern Lights while you are visiting - if there is a chance, be sure to pack warm clothing as it is very chilly outside in those areas at night. 

Because the Northern Lights is such an amazing phenomenon, it is hard for our phone cameras to capture the Northern Lights. If you want to try to capture the Northern Lights on a camera, be sure to do your research first. Or, leave the cameras behind and simply be in the moment and enjoy watching it all unfold in front of your eyes!
