Have you ever wondered what the Straits of Mackinac looks like during the winter season? Here are some shots from the winter boat this past week.

During the winter, the Mighty Huron boat, aka 'Slow Boat' goes across the Straits of Mackinac from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island. Since it’s slightly shorter from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island, the boat just runs from St. Ignace from November 1st and not from Mackinaw City.

It takes about one hour to get across and so often, you will see the sunrise while on the boat. It is absolutely stunning.  The lake is starting to freeze in spots, so the larger boat helps to break up the chunks of ice. Some mornings, I can be on a choppy ride, but it is SO beautiful and worth the large waves.

While few things are open on the island in the winter, it is a beautiful time to see the snow! Many locals go fat tire biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and winter hiking!

We love the views of the island during the quieter months.  Enjoy these beautiful shots from our favorite slice of paradise!
